Archbishop Robert J. Carlson celebrated Holy Mass for the Poor Clare Sisters on the 800th Anniversary of the founding of the Franciscan Order. The Order of Friars of Minor was founded in 1209 when Francis and a small group of his first followers traveled from Assisi to Rome and received approval from Pope Innocent III to life a life of poverty and simplicity based on the teachings of Jesus contained in the Gospels..The Poor Clares of St. Louis also are celebrating 50 years in St. Louis and are breaking ground for an addition to their Monastery. At the groundbreaking ceremony on the back lawns of the Monastery Archbishop Carlson was alerted that Sunday would also be Reverend Mother Mary Leo's birthday. He joked that she had to become a Poor Clare after being born on the Feast of St. Francis. The Poor Clare Sisters shared their enthusiasm for the Archbishop's visit by gathering along the cloister fence and watching the ceremony.
